The Water and Sanitation Barometer is a regular publication of the Harare Residents' Trust. It records what residents experience with water supply, sewer, toilets and refuse collection, community by community.
The Barometer has been running for years. Issue 9 of 2018, for example, covered suburbs including Paradise, Canaan, Highfield, Glen Norah, Glen View 2 and Budiriro.
Each issue looks at four simple questions about water:
- Availability: is there water, and how often?
- Accessibility: can residents get to it easily?
- Acceptability: is it fit to use?
- Quality: is it clean and safe?
Why it matters: when many residents report the same problem, it becomes evidence. HRT uses the Barometer in meetings with council, in the media and in submissions on the city budget.
What is new: residents can now record their report directly on this website. The results are added up automatically, so everyone can see what has been collected so far.
